NHS Health Checks

Since 2012, the Practice has been inviting eligible patients for an NHS Health Check. They are for adults in England aged between 40 and 74 who haven't already been diagnosed with heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes or kidney disease.

The Check gives the patient and their GP a clearer picture of their health and, if necessary, can help them take action to reduce the risk of the four common, but often preventable, medical conditions mentioned above and improve their chances of a healthier life. This could include suggestions on small changes to diet or how much exercise to take if risk is deemed to be low or moderate. For patients at higher risk, they might be offered among other things, medicines to control blood pressure, along with help to take action like losing weight or stopping smoking.

Each year, we are required to randomly select 20% or our eligible patients who are in the year of their 40th, 45th, 50th, etc birthday and invite them for a check. Take-up so far has been good but with around 400 invitations to be sent over the year, there may obviously be a delay in you receiving a letter. However, if you meet the age group criteria, you can contact us to book an appointment for a Health Check even if you have not received an invitation letter. In the meantime, if you're worried about your health, please contact your GP in the usual way.
